Success is Not a Goal; Success is a Result

Despite what you have been told, a successful career is not about focusing on you. It is about being the best support of others you can be. Be of value, not an expense. Success will happen.

In this ever-increasing narcissistic world I have been convinced that those that think only about their career and their desires, paying little to no attention to the team or other individuals that they work with, may appear to have success for the short-term but never have lasting success.

A major piece of advice I give anyone seeking career direction is “be a bargain”. Your manager needs to believe their return on investment from hiring you, or promoting you, will be greater than the cost of employing you. After all, business is about ROI.

I have found in my career that good employers “take care” of the employees that help accomplish corporate goals. Greater employee benefits have been rewarded through my career because I was valuable and they wanted to ensure I stayed with them.

There seems to be an attitude in today’s workforce that they “deserve” the perks before they have proven their worth. If that mindset was true, we should give our waitress at large tip before she even takes our order. After all, she “desires” it, right?

Do everything you can to help others succeed and you will find success; count on it.
