Employees are the only asset a company has that appreciates; all other assets depreciate. Your people are worth the effort up front.
Below are questions you should answer before you start looking for candidates.
How do you attract candidates?
Candidate attraction demands a strategy. Do you have one?
Have you done a SWOT analysis of existing positions?
Where can you locate the type of candidates that you need; both physically and on-line?
Do you know who is competing with you for your candidates?
Why would someone want to work at your company? Why do your long-term people stay?
Can a good candidate find you?
Can a candidate with similar background (i.e. CAD Operator) from a different market learn your work?
How do you handle Candidates in the interview process?
The first part of the interview is a “sizing up” process; both ways. Do you have a way to measure acceptable?
The interview is very much about what you can do for me, from both perspectives. Can you measure it?
As the interview progresses it moves to work/ life balance. What sets you apart from other companies?
Does the interviewer know the things that could make working for your company attractive?
Do you ask the right questions so the correct attractions can be presented?
Can you gain information about public opinion from the candidate about your company?
The following are questions you need to answer to keep great employees engaged.
Can you identify Engaged Employees?
Employees who show up and do their job are okay employees.
Employees who are engaged in their job are great employees.
Typically engaged employees are happy employees.
What percentage of employees at your company are engaged?
If the supervisor gives employees what they need and then gets out of their way they will stay more engaged.
Do you recognize the differences in the generations in your work force?
Generations in the work force-
Under 70
Under 50
Under 30
Entry Level/ Interns
Do you understand the paradigm of each group?
Do they feel they have an opportunity to be valuable?
Are you willing to let new ideas and new ways be considered?
The key to a great work force is pre-planning. This isn’t something we can try to do. We need to plan and then work the plan to be successful. In the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, Habit #2 is “Begin with the End in Mind” (create goals) and Habit #3 is “Put First Things First” (prioritizing what you do). You must create a plan and work the plan to be successful.
