Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 6:22-23), “The eye is the lamp to the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
This country has brought a new depth to its confusion and darkness in 2016. The political campaigns are disgusting and unprofessional. The voters’ responses to follow rude and obnoxious candidates have degraded the already pathetic political process. The perverseness of this country’s leadership, all the way to the President, and the public education system is beyond anything I would have ever imagined would be possible in this country founded on Biblical philosophy. Do our children even have a chance growing up in this “new normal” of accept everything as permissible, except God’s truth? How great is that darkness?
I have struggled with these questions for months. The only thing that keeps me sane is God’s Sovereignty. His plan has been, currently is and will be unfolding until He completes it. Many men have thought they were in charge, but, like Pharaoh, they are actually tools in God’s hands.
The fact that the Republican Party Leaders were foolish enough to allow their party’s primary season to be hijacked by a person that has never been a Republican did not surprise our God. The fact that our President forces his perverse ideas on the American people in the name of equality and twists our Constitution to push his warped agenda did not surprise our God.
Scripture tells us that life will be challenging for believers as we approach the end times. However, if we recognize His Sovereignty we must also recognize this is all taking us to the inevitable end. So what is our role in this dark world? Again in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5:13-16) Jesus said we are to be “salt and light” to the world. God has made me aware again that His light shines the brightest in the darkest surroundings. Jesus said in Matt 5:16, “Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
I recently had a conversation with someone talking about trans-gender people. They said they did not understand what the big fuss is about because these people have just realized they were born in the wrong gender body. When they ask me what I thought, I simple asked them if they believe God makes mistakes. They said no, of course not. I then asked if God doesn’t make mistakes how did He allow them to be born in the wrong gender body. I heard silence. I think the “light” chased away the “darkness”. We just need to shine the light of truth. The Holy Spirit will do the convicting.
With all this foolishness going on around me I have gone through a few months of actually being embarrassed to be an American. I have had to go through the stages of grief as I came to these conclusions. But once God helped me through my grief for this country, He also helped me realize I am not a citizen of this world, but of His Kingdom. My responsibility is to reflect His light in the circles He has placed me in. Through the “circles of light” He generates with all His people, He will call to His Kingdom those He chooses to call. The rest, as sad as it is, love the darkness, and how great is that darkness.
