No Price is Too High

I heard a story that caught my attention. A husband and wife planned a vacation to Paris. They bought plane tickets and made hotel reservations. Just before they left, a business issue came up and he could not go. He told his wife to take her sister and have fun.

While she was shopping in Paris, she came across a very expensive item that she really liked but knew she should make sure her husband agreed before spending that much money. She sent him a telegram giving him the details. The telegram answer came back and said, “No price is too high”.

When she got back, the first thing she did was thank him and showed him the item. He was confused. He said, “Why would you buy that when I said I didn’t think it was a good idea?”

Now, she was confused. She said, “Look at the telegram. It says, ‘No price is too high.” He looked at the telegram and then said, they dropped a comma. I told them to say, “No, price is too high.”

The comparison to our walk of faith hit me immediately and this question came into my mind. Are there commas in my walk with the Lord? Which is true when the Holy Spirit calls? Would I say…

            “No price is too high.”

                        Or

            “No, price is too high”

Am I walking with Him if it is comfortable, but backing off when “the price is too high?” Are there “things of this world” I want to hold on to tightly? Does my pride or my selfishness keep me from fulfilling His call on my life? This reminds me again of the story of the Rich Young Ruler In Mark Chapter 10. Jesus knew this was a man that followed the rules, but was he surrendered? Jesus’ reply was the defining point. “You lack one thing; Go sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me” (Mark 10:21). The young man “went away grieving”. The price was too high.

Father, please help me see life Your way. Help me to clearly hear and follow Your lead, no matter the price. Help me remember your plan is always best, no matter the circumstance or my limited ability to understand.
