A Place in the Son

I have said before that many secular songs, if you make a few minor changes, speak God’s truth. A few days ago, Stevie Wonder’s song “A Place in the Sun” was in my mind. While singing to myself, I realized the only change needed in this song was one letter. Sun changed to Son. Read through the lyrics and see if you don’t agree this could be a definition of coming to faith in Jesus.

A Place in the Sun by Stevie Wonder

Like a long, lonely stream
I keep runnin’ towards a dream
Movin’ on, movin’ on
Like a branch on a tree
I keep reachin’ to be free
Movin’ on, movin’ on

‘Cause there’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for everyone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run

There’s a place in the sun
And before my life is done
Gotta find me a place in the sun.

Like an old dusty road
I get weary from the load
Movin’ on, movin’ on
Like this tired troubled earth
I’ve been rollin’ since my birth
Movin’ on, movin’ on

There’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for everyone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run
I know there’s a place in the sun
And before my life is done
Gotta find me a place in the sun.

You know when times are bad
And you’re feeling sad
I want you to always remember.

Yes, there’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for everyone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run
I know there’s a place in the sun.

Here are my thoughts on the lyrics.

“Like a long, lonely stream
I keep runnin’ towards a dream.”

People without Jesus know they are missing something and keep trying to fill it with one worldly thing after another but cannot find the “dream”.

“Like a branch on a tree
I keep reachin’ to be free.”

Reminds me of the “vine and the branches”. People reach for answers when the source of the answers is right with them if they would only turn and follow Him.

“’Cause there’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for everyone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run.”

There is a place in the Son where “poor restless hearts” can run.

“Like an old dusty road
I get weary from the load.”

Jesus said follow Him and His burden is light.

“You know when times are bad
And you’re feeling sad
I want you to always remember.

Yes, there’s a place in the sun.”

Yes, there is a place in the Son and there is room for everyone who wants to follow Jesus.
