Rich Mullins, one of my favorite song writer/ musicians, wrote a song he titled “Creed”. He sings what I grew up knowing as the “Apostle’s Creed” which lists the deep tenants of the Christian faith. In this song he writes a line that I believe shapes every person in this world. He says-
“I believe what I believe is what makes me what I am.”
It challenges me to reflect on two things.
First, do I believe that statement?
Second, If yes, what are those core beliefs that make me what I am?
I do believe that statement. What I believe shapes everything that I do and how I go about doing those things. So, I reflected on these categories.
My Relationships
Jesus said the two most important things are to love God and love others.
Is my focus on what God can do for me or on serving Him whatever He needs me to do?
As I interact with people is my focus on pleasing me or helping others?
What do I do with my time?
In the book of Esther, she was told, “Maybe you are here for such a time as this.”
Do I believe the purpose of my life is to fulfill my dreams and desires?
Do I try to use the majority of my time to make an influence in His Kingdom?
What do I do with the talent that the Lord has given me?
We are all gifted with natural passions and talents at birth. When someone becomes a Christian, the Holy Spirit gives them addition gifts to use to further the Body of Christ.
Do I focus my natural talents on building a lifestyle I desire?
Do I seek the Lord’s guidance to do what He has prepared for me to do in His Kingdom?
What do I do with the treasures (finances and material things) the Lord has given me?
Do I see them as mine to enjoy and use as I see fit?
Do I recognize I am called to be stewards of what the Lord has brought into our lives?
Life is a matter of choices. I do agree with these words. “I believe what I believe is what makes me what I am.” Do I believe my purpose is to get out of this life what please me or do I believe I am here to be useful for the Lord in His Kingdom as His Spirit leads me?
