You Knew My Name

Selah, currently my favorite Christian artists, have a song titled “All My Praise”. In the middle of the song are lines that say,

“You made every star
You taught it how to shine
You knew my name before there was time
And all this is just part of Your glorious design
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
”

Do we ever pause for a minute and think about what statements like that actually mean? Consider how amazing our God is? That all we see and know was known by Him “before there was time”?

I recognize those thoughts are greater than we can even imagine. To personalize it I must consider God knew everything about me, everything I would do or say before He even started creating anything. He knitted me together in my mother’s womb. He numbered my days, so He knew the day of my birth and my death “before there was time”. Scripture says He even cares about the sparrows. He knows and loves everything in His creation.

If I begin to believe that He knew my whole life “before there was time”, I then must realize that is also true for the billions and billions of people that would ever inhabit this earth, from Adam until the last person born before He calls His children home. When I ponder that thought for a minute, it makes the words we have to describe Him inadequate. We say God is Sovereign. What does that mean to me? Everything is under His dominion…everything. Nothing surprises Him. Tragedies that make us wonder why, like the twin towers in the 911 attack or recent flooding in Texas that took many lives at a church camp, are all beyond our comprehension. However, He knew they were going to happen “before there was time”.

2 Corinthians 7:5-6 have two very comforting words for me, “But God”. Paul writes,

For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within. 6But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us.

When the circumstances have us rattled, we panic, but God is still in control. Our God is always there to comfort us, even when we ask why? He knew what would happen and how we would react. He only wants us to lean on Him and find the peace only He can bring in times of trial.

Thinking about God creating everything from nothing brings me back to what faith is built on. The writer of Hebrews wrote in 11:1-3,

11:1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

Heavenly Father, I am glad you “knew my name before there was time.” May I be the witness of your overwhelming wisdom and love that You want me to be🙏
