Gods Grace is Sufficient

Definition of words and phrases are the key to good communication and understanding of what is being said. Many times, what the speaker is saying is not understood by the listener because the listener has a different definition of what the word or phrase means than the speaker does. That being said, I would like to present clear definitions to the phrase above. So, I searched for a general definition and a Biblical definition of both of the words grace and sufficient.

Definitions of Grace found on Google-

Grace is a multifaceted concept that signifies unmerited favor, elegance, and harmony. It generally represents a gift, a blessing, or a quality of being that is freely given rather than earned.

In the Bible, grace is defined as the unearned, unmerited favor and love of God toward humanity, often described as receiving good things we do not deserve. It is a free gift rooted in God’s goodness rather than human merit, enabling salvation, forgiveness, and transformation.

Definitions of Sufficient found on Google-

A sufficient amount of something is enough – not too much, not too little, just right.

In a Biblical context, “sufficient” (Greek: arkeō) means enough, adequate, or meeting every true need.

The Scripture reference is found in Corinthians 9:1-10 where Paul talks about his “thorn in the flesh”. Verses 7-10 summarize that God’s grace is sufficient to show His power in our weakness…

7I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

When we try to handle the trials or temptations in life by ourselves, we will often fail because our ability to ignore or turn away from our “thorn in the flesh” is too weak to conquer it. But when we step out of the way and let the Holy Spirit guide us, God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. He will show us a way out.

In this passage, Paul tries at least three times to deal with the “thorn” on his own and always came back to praying that God would remove the thorn and not let Satan “torment me”. God’s answer was “My grace is sufficient for you”.

From the definitions from above, God’s grace (the free gift rooted in God’s goodness rather than human merit, enabling salvation, forgiveness, and transformation) is sufficient (enough, adequate, or meeting every true need) to overcome the “thorn in the flesh”. When Paul finally understood God’s power in his weakness, he was able to say “I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong”.

I have found it is our need to “control the situation” with our own strength and knowledge that create the problem. There are times when we just cannot control it. I have come to recognize that is part of God’s design for humanity. If we had the strength to overcome everything on our own, we would not need God. I believe He has put people and situations on our life that create issues we cannot handle and, only by releasing the situation to Him and letting Him guide us through His Holy Spirit, will we be able to find the “peace that passes understanding” that only God can provide.

God’s grace does not mean we will not have trouble. Jesus told His disciples on His last night with them before His crucifixion to expect trouble in John 16:33…

16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Whatever the world throws at us, He has overcome “so that in Me you may have peace”. That is the peace we find when we let Him lead us through no matter what the situation or outcome.

The truth is God’s grace is sufficient to get us through this sin-stained world and eventually into His loving arms and eternal joy and peace.
