There was a wedding in Cana, about 20 miles away from where Jesus was staying. One thing that this study has made me aware of is how different travel was compared to today. 20 miles is less than a half hour by car. But then it would take days by foot. As they traveled to Jerusalem for holy days, they had to travel 90 miles from their homes. So different than our lives today.
Jesus family and disciples were invited to the wedding. I assume Jesus’ mother Mary was somehow related to the wedding family because she becomes aware they were running out of wine. I doubt that was public knowledge. This story is one of my favorites because of the interaction between Mary and Jesus.
Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.”
“Woman, why do you involve Me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”
“Do whatever He tells you.” She had no doubt He could fix the problem. (God given faith). Then He gets up and performs His first public miracle. I love Jesus’ respect for His mother’s wish and Mary’s faith that He could solve the problem, even though she had no idea how. I think about John, the other disciples that were there, and the servants that were all aware of what just happened. This was another act of creation by the Creator. Jesus totally changes the molecular structure of water into wine. Scripture says, “And His disciples believed in Him.” That seems like a very understated remark. They had to be overwhelmed with the thought of what just happened and what must be to come. They will never be the same again.
Sometimes the Bible stories are so common to us I think they lose their wonder. Imagine for a moment you were one of the servants. You are having a normal day serving at a party and this lady says, “Do whatever He tells you.” Then this guy walks over and says fill the water jars. A normal request. Then he says to you, dip into the water and take it to the master of the banquet. Now you start to wonder. You know the wine is gone. What is happening? You take it to the master of the banquet, and he is amazed at how great the wine is. What are you thinking? How can you explain it to others? Your life will never be the same. You have just witnessed a miracle firsthand. You know Jesus is not just a normal man.
