The Gambler

In 1978, Kenny Rogers sang “The Gambler”. Probably because I love music and what music writers can say that I cannot put into words, but phrases in some songs like this one ring like crystal to me. I believe the words below from this song ring true throughout life.

The first part of the chorus says,

You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em

Know when to walk away, know when to run

The beginning of verse four says,

Every gambler knows that the secret to survivin’

Is knowin’ what to throw away, and knowin’ what to keep

All truth is God’s truth. Sometimes man thinks they come up with an original thought, but if it is truth, the core of their thought is God’s truth. When I hear these words, I hear Biblical guidance.

In the gambler’s card game, the lines of the chorus above are saying he will either “hold” the cards he is dealt and play them or “fold” them and put them face down on the table. The lines in the verse above say a similar thing. The secret to “surviving” in the game you are playing is knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep.

As I hear these words I think of my daily walk and the Spirit walking with me. He is with me through every step of my day prompting me to “hold” on to what is good for me and “fold” on what is not good for me. If what is not good for me is tempting me, He is there to say “walk away” or if I need to “run away” from the temptation. So, the “secret to surviving” my Christian walk is to “know what to throw away” and “know what to keep”. The Holy Spirit is given to all believers to help us sort life’s choices out, if we will listen to Him.

In 2 Timothy 2:22-24, Paul tells his young friend Timothy,

22 Run from temptations that capture young people. Always do the right thing. Be faithful, loving, and easy to get along with. Worship with people whose hearts are pure. 23 Stay away from stupid and senseless arguments. These only lead to trouble, 24 and God’s servants must not be troublemakers. They must be kind to everyone, and they must be good teachers and very patient.

In 1 Corinthians 10:13, Paul tells us,

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

To be what God calls me to be, I need to let the Spirit tell me when to “hold them” or when to “fold them”, when to “walk away” and when to “run”. May He give me “ears to hear”.

  1. I was suggested this website by my cousin. I am not sure whether this post is written by him as no one else know such detailed about my difficulty. You are amazing! Thanks!

    1. I am not amazing. God is amazing. I know nothing about you, He knows everything. Give your concerns to Him and He will give you peace. You might want to read the e-book on my website, A Closer Walk. It is free to read. May God bless your day.

  2. I do accept as true with all of the concepts you’ve offered to your post. They are really convincing and will certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are too short for beginners. Could you please prolong them a bit from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.
